Solar Eclipse On-Campus Viewing Party: August 21, 2017

If you are geeking out about the upcoming solar eclipse, you are in good company.

Florida Tech will be opening up the observatory deck on top of Olin Physical Science Building for students and the public to view the solar eclipse on Monday, August 21.

The event starts at 1:30 p.m. and runs until 4 p.m. The eclipse window is from 1:21 to 4:16 p.m., with the best viewing opportunity starting at  2:30 p.m. when there is an expected 84% totality from Melbourne.

Eclipse viewers have the rare opportunity to look directly at the Suns’ outer atmosphere, the corona, through safety glasses and/or telescope solar filters provided by Florida Tech.

The eclipse will also be live streamed from places along the path totality from classroom 405 OPS. The room will also feature a hands-on activity for eclipse enthusiasts of all ages. Attendees will be able to make their own pinhole “camera” that can be used to project the Sun’s image and view the eclipse safely, using everyday household materials.

As part of campus welcome week activities, a solar eclipse party is a great way to kick off a new semester, plus there will be rooftop snacks.
