Marine and Environmental Science Camp: Plankton, Sharks, and Water Quality

The Marine and Environmental Science Camp kick started the week with a number of fun activities and lessons. The campers learned about the ecology of plankton and ways marine scientists  collect plankton. Each camper made their own pantyhose plankton net. They then used the completed nets to collect plankton from the FIT Garden and Ballard Park on the Eau Gaille River. After collection, the campers were then able to view their plankton under microscopes. Also during the day’s activities, the Marine and Environmental Science campers discussed why measuring water quality was important and gained hands-on experience with different types of water quality instrumentation.  And finally, the campers also got a lesson in sharks. Rumor has it, that a shark specimen made an appearance!
