Faculty and Staff Share Research, Projects and Insights Related to COVID-19

Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, older adults with underlying cardiovascular disease have been experiencing increased disease severity and higher mortality rates from COVID-19. To shed some light on why, on June 1, Florida Tech’s College of Engineering and Science hosted a free virtual workshop featuring keynote speaker Majd AlGhatrif, a medical doctor and researcher at Johns Hopkins University, who leads human cardiovascular studies at the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Science at National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging.

To supplement the keynote address, the workshop also featured presentations from four Florida Tech faculty members highlighting a few university efforts undertaken in response to the pandemic.

Personal Protective Equipment Design & Manufacturing

Using 3D printers at various locations on the university’s Melbourne campus and at its nearby Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Innovative Design, faculty, staff and students produced and delivered dozens of face shields for health care workers on the Space Coast.

Identification of Risk Factors in COVID-19 Using Machine Learning Techniques

Using machine learning techniques and publicly available data from the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering, researchers from Florida Tech’s mathematical sciences and computer engineering and sciences departments confirmed several key factors associated with COVID-19.

Statistical Modeling & Simulations of COVID-19 Spread

Florida Tech researchers are developing a suite of models for spatiotemporal prediction of COVID-19 spread. They are separately modeling COVID-19 trends, assumptions and intervention impacts using several available data sets, which can eventually be used to implement future interventions to control the spread of the disease.

Dashboard to Support Data Analytics & Visualization for COVID-19

Faculty and students from Florida Tech’s Center for Advanced Data Analytics and Systems (CADAS) are working with a team from the U.S. Air Force to use machine learning and artificial intelligence to strengthen understanding of the effects COVID-19 has on Air Force missions and operations.
