Marine and Environmental Science Camp: Spoil Island Day

Today the Marine and Environmental Science Camp visited BC47, a spoil island located in the Indian River Lagoon. Spoil islands are man-made islands comprised of leftover material from the dredging of the Intercoastal Waterway. After several decades, these islands have become habitats for many native plants and animals. The campers took a boat trip out to BC47, which has been adopted by the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems. They planted mangroves, helped removal the invasive Brazilian Pepper, monitored the nests of the Endangered Least Terns, and seined in seagrass beds around the island.
