5 Questions with Christian Austria, M.S. Accounting and Financial Forensics’17
College of Business alumnus, Christian Austria, recently became Florida Tech’s first graduate of our master’s program in accounting and financial forensics.
How does it feel to be the first graduate of the M.S. in Accounting Program?
It feels good. I’m glad I can be a part of something new at FIT. Plus, I’m really happy the program opened because this is the field I would like to work in.
Was there any kind of specific inspiration to pursue a master’s degree? Why at Florida Tech?
I have several. First, I am the first sibling of six to graduate college and pursue a masters and I hope that my hard work carries forward and encourages my other brothers and sister to finish college and continue their education. Second, FIT offered a Fast Track program that allowed me to complete the program sooner and I couldn’t say no to that opportunity to be able to get a masters in half the time. Lastly, I plan on taking the CPA (certified public accounting) exam which requires a masters degree to meet the minimum education requirements to receive the certification.
What connection do you have to FIT through your family?
My grandfather taught some sciences and engineering courses back when the university was just starting. He recommended me to apply to FIT back when I was still a senior in high school. I never knew I would actually follow through and graduate from here. Graduating is a crazy feeling.
What is something someone would be surprised to know about you?
I know a lot about cars. Cars are something I was introduced to back in 2005 when I went to my first car show. Since then, I have admired everything about cars. I also don’t like plastic and in the last year I have been focusing on minimizing the way I receive/utilize plastic.
What advice would you give someone interested in earning an MS at FIT.
First, if you are interested in earning an MS and are a current student at FIT, consider the fast track program so you can graduate and pursue your career sooner. Second, study hard and don’t forget what you learned from your undergrad experience. Even if you lack the work experience your bachelors should help create a platform for your MS.
