Books to Bring to the Beach

As J.K. Rowling says, if you don’t like to read you haven’t found the right book. There are many, many “Books You Should Read List.” My list is going to be a little different: these are the books that I adore, for no other reason than I enjoy reading them. Some of them are old friends, my favorite go-to escapes since childhood; some are recent additions, but I love them all. I no particular order:

  The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

“…No heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams.”

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

“Comrade,” said he, “I adjure you as a Christian and a soldier, to tell me where we are going. I am Captain Dantes, a loyal Frenchman, though accused of treason; tell me where you are conducting me, and I promise you on my honour I will submit to my fate.”

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

Dreams do come true, if only we wish hard enough. You can have anything in life if you will sacrifice

everything else for it.” “

Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all
and in the darkness bind them.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

“This is the land of Narnia,’ said the Faun, ‘where we are now; all that lies between the lamp-post and the great castle of Cair Paravel on the eastern sea.”

The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint-Exupery

“It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.”

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”

Persuasion by Jane Austen

“You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope…I have loved none but you.”

Divergent by Veronica Roth

“We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.”

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

“Have you fallen in love with the wrong person yet?’
Jace said, “Unfortunately, Lady of the Haven, my one true love remains myself.”
“At least,” she said, “you don’t have to worry about rejection, Jace Wayland.”
“Not necessarily. I turn myself down occasionally, just to keep it interesting.”
