Ice Cream: a Little Research of Our Own

By Kathy Turner

Today’s Library “question board” query centers around the fact that July 1 is National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day.  Who knew?  (Apparently some did.)

Evans Library wants to know your favorite flavor!

While the responses on our board represent a very small sample (ha ha), in reality, a quick-and-effective search of a scholarly medical database, PubMed, reveals that over 1000 journal articles have been published regarding ice cream.  These articles, many full-text, discuss nutrition, unexpected/unintended ingredients (believe me, Ben and Jerry don’t name their flavors after these), and many, many multi-syllabic research aspects.

PubMed is just one of more than 150 curriculum- and research-supporting databases that the Evans Library provides.  Specifically it “comprises more than 23 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books.”

The Evans Library is a place and an interface where you can find many opinions — those that are well-researched and those that are right off the tip of the tongue.
