Reflections of a Graduate
Anushka Boyd shares her Florida Tech experience after graduating May 5, 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. Anushka will remain involved with Florida Tech, serving as a Student Ambassador of the Arts and Communication.
Coming to FIT wasn’t my first choice. To be honest, it was more of a last minute change of mind. At first I thought, “Private engineering school? No way, not me.” That’s all I knew about Florida Tech based on what I’ve heard from locals. But now that I’ve experienced Florida Tech and all its diversity, I discovered that it has more to offer than I ever imagined. I’ve changed my major twice; the last time being mid-way through my sophomore year. I’ve refocused my career path more than five times, and each time it changes is because of an experience I’ve had at Florida Tech. If you don’t take the wrong path every now and then, you won’t have a way of knowing when you’re on the right one.
Take me, for example. I originally came to Florida Tech for the ROTC program and was a Forensic Psychology major. I wanted to be a detective, or work for a police force with K-9’s. Then I had this consuming idea to work with animals so I switched my major to Animal Learning and Behavior in the Psychology department. To keep things simple, ROTC didn’t work out and neither were my psychology courses. It just didn’t seem to fit me. So, surprisingly enough, I switched again. This time it wasCommunication and I knew it was the last time I would switch. Luckily, I had the opportunity to become an RA, which I took, and it was so awesome! To still be part of a team again was refreshing, not to mention a second chance to stay at Florida Tech. I also got involved with the student newspaper, the Crimson. After being a writer for a year, I’m now the editor for the Campus Life section. I also started working at the Tech Support Center and got my nerd on to pay the bills. I’ve also become the Vice President of the Florida Tech chapter for Florida Public Relations Association as well as Student Ambassador for the School of Arts and Communication. I’m proud to say I found where I belong as a student and have learned new things about myself having gone through all these things. I love working with people and keeping them happy so much that I now want to pursue Customer Relations/Hospitality as well as travel and tourism. I’ve been a busy bee the past couple of years so it will be a little strange to not have a million and one things to do and places to be every day. But there is this thing called free time that I will get to enjoy a little bit of before I continue my big girl job search after graduation.
Back in high school, four years seemed like a long time. I approached college with eagerness and now I’m trying to slow down to make sure I don’t miss anything. I remember people telling me time would fly by and I would just take it lightly because seriously, I was just getting started! Now I see what they meant. When you’re living in the moment, it’s just another ordinary moment. Looking back on it, it’s all one big experience made up of smaller moments that each hold a special value.
Reality is starting to sink in and I feel it more and more each day. But what is this reality? It’s the fact that I have completed another milestone and now it’s time to leave the place I’ve gotten so accustomed to, a place I’ve called home. This ending is also the start of a new chapter in my life and my grand entrance into what we like to call “the real world”. The best way to describe everything is bittersweet. It has been a long journey full of setbacks as well as accomplishments. But I don’t feel I’ve really reached the dead end, it’s just another fork in the path.
