Things to Do: Summer Edition

I’ll be here for the summer. What things to do should I check out?

Many students may leave Melbourne for the summer, but a growing population is choosing to stay right here at Florida Tech—and with good reason. What could be better than crossing some required classes off your list while having an adventure in the Florida sun? Here’s a taste of things to do in summer at Florida Tech:

Take Classes

The university offers tons of interesting summer courses, including field courses in the Indian River Lagoon and the Florida Keys. Plus, if you take more than six credits during the semester, you can receive a 50% tuition discount. There are also those little known benefits of sticking around campus during the summer months: Ample parking and more food for you at the dining hall. (That’s your cue to say: Sign me up!)

Live it up at the Theme Parks

With campus only an hour away from the hottest theme parks in the world, summer is the perfect time to use those annual passes and have the time of your life. Ride roller coasters, get soaked in a spring-boat, or catch a live entertainment show. As an added bonus, if you stick around this summer, you can be the first to ride new attractions, such as Universal’s Skull Island: Rein of Kong, Epcot’s Frozen Ever After, or Seaworld’s Mako hyper coaster (Orlando’s tallest, fastest, and longest coaster). Also, don’t forget the special events like the International Flower and Garden Festival and Summer Nights!

See Your Favorite Performer in Concert

Several major cities are a short car ride away, so the possibilities are endless. Locally at the King Center for the Performing Arts, this summer you can see Bill Maher, Ted Nugent, Mak and Val from Dancing with the Stars, as well as a few rockin’ Classic Albums Live shows. Performers such as Cyndi Lauper, Selena Gomez, Florence and the Machine, Amy Shumer, Ellie Goulding, Demi Lovato & Nick Jonas, Justin Beiber, Twenty One Pilots and Halsey are all headlining shows in the Orlando area.

Party at Local Festivals

Florida has all sorts of unique events throughout the summer. Love music? Take a trip with your country-loving friends to the Country 500 (featuring heavy-hitters Luke Bryan, Florida-Georgia Line, Kid Rock and more) or if electronica is more your thing, grab tickets to the Sunset Music Festival. Get your music superstars with a side of fireworks at Orlando XL 106.7’s Red, Hot and Boom July 4th event. Are you a little on the nerdy side? Unleash your inner nerd at conventions like Florida SuperCon or SharkCon. Foodies can get their grub on at the Great American Burgerfest, International Mango Festival or Key West Lobsterfest.

Catch a Rocket Launch or Two

Get your camera ready and camp yourself in your favorite rocket launch viewing location because we have a handful of Space X and United Space Alliance launches scheduled for the summer. Check out a detailed launch schedule here.  There’s nothing like a launch on the Space Coast!

Cruise into Fun

Florida is home to five cruise ports, including one just 30 minutes north of campus—Port Canaveral. Take a week to explore different islands in the Caribbean or hop over to the Bahamas on a weekend. Traveling has never been easier or more enjoyable.

Experience the Great Outdoors

Every day can be a beach day on the Florida coast. Also, there are over 100 state parks and trails for all of your nature-filled activities. Tube. Kayak. Swim. Run. Surf. The hard part is deciding which activity to do.

Florida Tech, let’s have the best summer ever.
