Lame Excuses Standing in the Way of achieving your dreams & Why they don’t count

My last post was about my decision to recommit to my lifelong dream to become an author. What is your lifelong passion, and what’s stopping you from doing it right now? I am going to be harsh: any possible excuse you can come up with is not a good enough reason to prevent yourself from pursuing your dreams. Here’s why:

  1. I don’t have time – Make time. What could possibly be more important that pursuing your lifelong passion? You know you always find the time to watch stupid videos on YouTube. If you have time for #latestviralvideo, you certainly have time to invest in yourself.
  2. I don’t know where to start.  Any step forward is a step in the right direction. You don’t have to start by tackling a huge task–it’s okay to start small and build upon your success. Just start!
  3. I’m going to fail anyway. This mentality is particularly fatal. Are you really happier achieving nothing because you are too scared to try? Here are you three options: 1) you can do nothing and be  a safe coward that has never failed but never achieved anything, either; 2) you can be courageous and try and fail; 3) you can be courageous, try your hardest, and wake up one day realizing you have the life you’ve always dreamed of. If you try, you will either be brave or have achieved your dreams. Either option seems like a “win” to me.
  4. It’s not what society/my friends/my parent/ my lover expect me to do.  As to society, who are you referring to? Who is the “they” you are actually scared of? Take a walk through Walmart and look at some of the fashions people are wearing–if they have the courage to not care about societal expectations over something as trivial as clothing, why should you let the “they” you can’t even identify rule over your life. When the infamous “they” say “you’ll never be able to do that!” you can say, “watch me!” When you don’t have the support from the people you depend upon, it’s hard but not impossible. Prove to them that you are serious and committed. Prove to them that you can do it.

So get off your tush, go out, and start achieving the things you’ve been dreaming about! You’ve run out of excuses!
