Reviews by students from the School of Arts & Communication

“On the 24th of March I was pleased to be given the opportunity of going on a field trip with the School of Arts and Communication to Channel 13 News. As we left Florida Tech bright and early I was so excited because I have never been to a TV station before. The ride to Orlando was quick and easy as the girls were jovial and friendly, even though I had never met any of them before. On arriving at Channel 13 we were greeted and the tour officially began. It was so great to see that everyone that worked there was friendly and inviting as we were quickly welcomed to every department. Each member was happy to tell us of his/her line of duty at Channel 13 and they welcomed pictures even during their pre-recorded shows. We were given advice on how to make it into the wonderful world of broadcasting and were even offered business cards if we ever had any questions. I am so thankful for Anushka Boyd and the whole School of Arts and Communication team for giving me this great opportunity to get a little taste of what my future will be!”

“Field trip to Channel 13 News is great. This is my first time to go News station in United States. Today new media is rising and many people say that traditional media is dying. I found a lot of attractions for working in Channel 13 News through this field trip. Staff of 13 News is kind, and friendly. They are celebrities, and they say hello to us, show their jobs, give us very useful advice about job and internship. I could tell that they are professional staff.

“The trip to News Channel 13 was an amazing experience that opened my eyes to the world of news broadcasting. Getting a first hand look at the process of creating the news made me realize how much work and effort really went in to news broadcasting. This trip allowed me to learn what it would take in order to be in the broadcasting business, and what better way to learn than from the reporters themselves. I am extremely grateful I was able to go on this trip because now I know what steps I have to take if I want to be a reporter for the news.”

“I had an amazing experience at the News Channel 13 field trip to Orlando. We got to visit the news station itself and viewed the different rooms and equipment used for broadcasting. We met with different newscasters and learned how they got to where they are, as well as what they like and dislike about their job. The most interesting part of the trip was when we got to watch a news segment be pre-recorded to air later that day. Everyone got to see what it was like to work there for a day and it was a great experience that I might not have been able to get at another school.”

Jennifer Wayne, Humanities Pre-Law

“Going into the Channel News 13 tour, I was hopeful, but kept my expectations grounded just in case it wasn’t everything I wanted it to be. Now, I can say with confidence that this was the best studio tour I have been on (yes, better than NBC in NYC). From the moment Michelle Hibbard met us in the lobby, we were given a personal tour with utmost professionalism. Paula Machado, Jackie Brockington, Ybeth Bruzual, and Caroline Rowland were not simply willing to talk to us, but wanting to engage, talk to us, and answer our questions. Ryan Harper even let us try out his state-of-the-art traffic technology!”

“As soon as I was told about the field trip to News 13, I had to go. I’m so happy I did because it was the best field trip I’ve ever been on. My ultimate dream is to become a newscaster so this field trip was so important to me. I actually made a connection with one of the news anchors, and she gave me her business card and I almost fainted. Because of the field trip I made a huge step in getting connections!”
