7 Future Careers for Space Science Grads
Advances in technology will create the jobs of the future
Space science is a fast-paced, constantly changing field where technology is being continually developed to do things faster, better, and in ways they have never been done before. Much, if not most, of what today’s space science graduates will do in their careers isn’t even being thought about yet, much less planned or carried out. Learn which jobs are available.
Here are some future careers for space scientists that will come to be as technology continues to develop.
1. Robot Designer.
Robots are being used to automate more tasks, not just in space science but in many other applications for industry and private life. Robot designers will be needed to develop the hardware and also guide the interactions between robots and people as the machines get more complex.
2. Space Pilot.
A number of companies are developing space tourism models that would see shuttle trips to space or even to the moon. These companies will need a number of pilots who can run these shuttles to space and back, greatly increasing the number of space pilots needed in the space science field.
3. Data Analyst.
Space science, like just about every field, is generating increasing amounts of data that companies and organization can use to maximize their operations and develop new technologies and advances. Space science data analysts may even be able to use data predictively to tell what will happen in the future.
4. Battery Engineer.
Batteries are being used for more things than ever before, like smartphones and tablets, hybrid cars, and equipment needed for space travel and colonization. Efforts to develop better batteries that last longer or run on sustainable materials will continue into the foreseeable future in order to support continuing advances in the field.
5. Fusion Power Worker.
Fusion power plants are expected to become common by 2025, and will need space scientists like physicists and others to work at the plants. Fusion power technology was developed through space scientists’ studies of the nuclear reactions that power stars, and may also be used to power rockets in the future.
6. Biotech Scientist.
Along with discovering new treatments and medications for diseases and conditions, biotech scientists are also exploring the effects of long-term space travel on the human body and looking for ways to counteract the effects and allow longer periods of space travel in the future.
7. Carbon Fiber Spaceship Fabricator.
Carbon fiber composite materials are enabling space scientists to bring the weight of spaceships down so that they are more versatile and use less fuel. Carbon fiber is also stronger than even metal alloys and when combined with other materials like resins, can withstand the pressure and temperature changes of space travel.
