With many countries’ space programs being cut back or floundering, some may wonder if the world needs more space engineers. Will there still be jobs for new graduates? Is it a wise career path? Without a doubt, the answer to all of these questions is an unequivocal “yes.” Here are five reasons why we need more, not fewer, space engineers.

1. Space engineers do more than just work on spacecraft.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, aerospace engineers also work with military aircraft, commercial aircraft, helicopters, satellites and missiles. They design the structures themselves as well as the software and electronics that keep them running. They conduct research into new technologies, and they also test prototypes to make sure they work the way they are supposed to.

As private space travel continues to develop and prepare for future launch, there may also be opportunities to work for private companies to develop, design and test spacecraft and programs for private space travel.
