5 Signs a Degree in Sustainabilty Is the Right Option for You

Changing the world can start with a Florida Tech sustainability degree

A degree in sustainability just may help save the world one day, and in the meantime, it will be really fun. Sustainability graduates may get to work with animals or celebrities, tell corporate giants what to do and how to do it, or have a part in making the world a safer, greener place for everyone to live.

Sustainability means practices that use fewer resources or offset the use of resources with other energy or resource-saving practices. Helping businesses and organizations make good use of their resources and conserve energy when possible is a career that can have positive effects on the environment and could potentially even impact climate change.

Sustainability means practices that use fewer resources or offset the use of resources with other energy or resource-saving practices. Helping businesses and organizations make good use of their resources and conserve energy when possible is a career that can have positive effects on the environment and could potentially even impact climate change.

A degree in sustainability might be the best option for you if any of the following signs describe you.

1. You coordinate recyclables for your dorm, your high school, your afterschool job, pretty much any place you go that doesn’t already recycle. You may even be able to tell whoever is in charge the facts about how many tons of trash don’t go into landfills because of recycling. You figure, why not get paid for something you already do anyway?

2. Off the top of your head, you can name all of the endangered species native to where you live and you attend frequent protests to try to keep people from disturbing the delicate habitats of these vulnerable creatures.

3. You’re on top of all the green trends from solar panels to green roofing, and you’re the only one in your friend group whose dream house includes solar panels, a barrel to catch rainwater, and a living green roof—so far. You’re working on them—it’s only a matter of time before they see the light.

4. You even know how green trends in business can lead to cost savings and improve the environment at the same time. Math may not ordinarily be your strong suit, but you can tell a CEO to the penny how much money they could save by switching to LED light bulbs, how much in grant money the business could be eligible for when they implement various green initiatives, and the exact amount of tax incentives the business could get for going green.

5. You throw things at the TV when climate change deniers appear on news or political shows. How dare they not believe in what is clearly a pattern of warming caused by increases in CO2 emissions! So far, none of those shows have responded to your requests to come on their show and rebut the denier, but you know it’s only a matter of time before you get to have your say and your response goes viral on Twitter, making you a famous sustainability expert.
