Exceptions to the Rules

All companies have rules and guidelines that employees are expected and encouraged to follow. Depending on the size of your company, you may have a Human Resources department that makes and enforces these codes.

This week’s FLORIDA TODAY guest author Jan Sullivan Chalmers, a retired Organizational Ombudsman and Florida Supreme Court certified Civil and County Mediator, discusses how to be creative in your managerial decisions, and stresses the importance of rewarding those hard working employees that deserve it.

Ultimately you may not be able to bend the rules, but if possible and ethical, helping an employee who is in need and warrants reward will show your gratitude and flexibility. As long as favoritism isn’t being showed, follow your instinct to reward those that make your company thrive.
