Researching Employers

By Kristiana Henkel

Employer Day is next Wednesday, are you ready?

Employer Day is the Florida Institute of Technology Spring Job Expo hosted by Career Management Services. Employers from all over the United States come to meet you and this year we have over 70 employers registered to come to the event. You can check out the full list of companies attending on Panther Career Link.

With Employer Day next week you should already have your resume reviewed and ready to be printed. This weekend is a chance for  you to take some time to sit down and research employers attending and determine which ones you want to meet in advance.

The first place you’ll want to look is in Panther Career Link. All registered employers have a profile in the system that will allow you to see what industry they are in, what majors they are recruiting and if they have any jobs posted with our office.

Next, you should visit the company’s website. The first page you will want to look at is the “About Us” section which will typically overview the company’s history as well as their industry. In addition to the “About Us” page, take a look at the company mission statement to get a better feel for the company culture. The company may also have a section with press releases. It is always a good idea to take a look at these to get a better idea of what is going on at the company.

Social Media is another great tool to use when researching employers. Many companies will have LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ pages that will enable you to connect with that company on a more personal level. In some cases you can even directly interact with a recruiter or hiring manager at that company.

Remember, the more you know about the company the more you’ll impress the recruiter you are talking to. On top of that you will have more time to talk to them about the specifics of the company and the opportunities they have available.
